The National Security Council (NSC) is supposed to be a group of the president's most senior military, diplomatic, and intelligence advisors. Yet under a directive issued by Donald Trump, Steve Bannon – his top advisor who is an extremist, anti-Muslim, white nationalist, anti-Semitic, and an alleged domestic abuser – has been appointed to the inner circle of the NSC, while the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director of National Intelligence have been pushed aside.
This move is unheard of. Presidents have not previously put political advisors on the Council because politics should never impact national security decisions. And Bannon's twisted politics are already affecting them – the Muslim and refugee ban is proof.
Bannon believes in the dangerous lie that the U.S. is at war with Islam and that America should be the center of a new movement of right-wing populism centering on white nationalism. We cannot let this vision be the beating heart of our nation's national security policy.
Congress has the power to stop this. Legislation has been introduced in both the House and Senate to protect the independence of our national security from Steve Bannon's political meddling.
