Tell the FBI to stop covering for white nationalist violence!
Petition to the FBI:
The new domestic terrorism category “Racially Motivated Violent Extremism” is a clear smoke screen to downplay and ignore the very serious threats that white supremacist violence poses to us all and justify unnecessary and intrusive surviellance of non-violent Black and brown political activists. We demand the FBI discontinue the use of “Racially Motivated Violent Extremism” category and actually investigate the clear and specific threat of white supremacist violence.
The FBI is far from perfect, but under Trump, they’re actively getting worse.
Instead of investigating the very serious, and very real, threats of white nationalist violence, the FBI recently conflated the white national domestic terrorism into a broader category called “Racially Motivated Violent Extremism.”
This is a strategic move designed to do 2 things: downplay and stall investigations into organized white nationalist hate groups; and increase surveillance on non-violent Black and brown political activists opposing the Trump administration.
Tell the FBI their racism is showing. Sign the petition: Stop covering up the threat of white nationalist violence!
“Racially Motivated Violent Extremism” is so broad that it conflates hard-right, well-organized, violent white supremacists with Black and brown, often non-violent, protesters. And that’s by design.
The FBI has a long and storied history of diverting attention from the calculated violence of the extreme political right in order to justify spying on organizers and activists of color under programs like COINTELPRO. Now, instead of taking the threat of violent white nationalism seriously and devoting resources to investigating and prevent their attacks, the FBI is signaling they’d rather give violent white racists a pass.
We can’t let the FBI slide back into the shameful days of COINTELPRO while more and more extreme white nationalists turn to violence and terrorism.
Tell the FBI to stop covering for violent white nationalists, and stop profiling Black and brown political activists.
