We stand with the people of BHM1 in Bessemer, Alabama in their fight for a democratic voice in their workplace. The union election in Bessemer is part of a larger fight -- Amazon workers have been organizing and communities have been resisting the company’s stranglehold on our democracy for years. Despite the outcome, the vote in Bessemer shows us all how to take on Amazon. If people keep organizing and coming together like the people of Bessemer, we will break Amazon’s stranglehold on our democracy.

The deplorable way that Amazon has wielded its power and wealth to deceive, bully, and deny workers their voice in Bessemer is a reminder of how Amazon treats all of our communities.

Amazon bullies and buys the submission of lawmakers, so it receives tax breaks for itself that extract resources from communities. It sidesteps city councils to build an enormous, warrantless surveillance network for police that will only increase mass incarceration. It exploits its platform to bend and crush business it deems a competitor. And it uses its power in Washington to shape how privacy, online marketplaces, and the whole internet are governed, so it can keep on doing what it wants.

In this critical moment where Big Tech behemoths like Amazon have more power than ever, Members of Congress have an obligation to protect our country's core democratic principles. That includes protecting working people and small business owners from unaccountable corporations. We need meaningful antitrust reform to break up Amazon and rein in its power!
