Urge your Senators to vote YES on holding Trump accountable for illegally sending people to an El Salvador prison

    Petition to Congress:
We urge you to vote 'Yes' on S.Res.195, a privileged resolution that would require the administration to report on human rights abuses by the Salvadoran government, assess whether U.S. security assistance is contributing to those abuses, and explain what the U.S. is doing to protect due process, defend the rights of U.S. citizens and residents, and ensure compliance with U.S. court orders.

The Trump administration is ignoring the courts and the rule of law to carry out his cruel mass deportations. When Trump sent nearly 300 people to El Salvador’s horrific CECOT mega-prison, he violated the law and handed over people to a foreign dictatorship.

Senator Tim Kaine said, “Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has rounded up tens of thousands of Salvadorans without due process and jammed them indefinitely into overpopulated torture centers.”1 Trump has joined Bukele in sending people to the brutal prison where El Salvador’s justice minister says the only way out is “in a coffin.”2

Senate Democrats will now force a vote to uncover how Trump defied federal court orders, and hold Trump publicly accountable for sending people to a foreign prison. This is one of the few opportunities Congress has had to formally condemn Trump’s actions.

Sign the petition: Tell your Senators to hold the Trump administration accountable for sending people to El Salvador’s brutal prison. Our lawmakers must stop this from happening again!

Senator Chris Van Hollen spoke on Trump’s travesty of justice after returning from seeing Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador, the man the Trump administration admits to sending to CECOT by mistake. “The American people deserve answers on this clear defiance of our nation’s constitutional rights and the extent of El Salvador’s complicity in this scheme, as well its human rights abuses.”3

This Senate resolution would require the Trump Administration to report on its so-called compliance with court orders, the Government of El Salvador’s collusion with the Trump Administration to violate due process rights, and the broader human rights concerns in El Salvador. And if this measure passes but Trump fails to produce the report, all U.S. security assistance to Bukele’s regime will be cut off.4

Trump’s sickening, racist mass deportations and his defiance of court orders are bringing us closer to the end of American democracy with each passing day of brutal extremism. Trump’s actions are a serious breach of human rights, our system of laws, and the foundations of our democracy. Congress must vote to condemn and shed light on Trump’s violations.
