    Petition to Congress:
    We urge you to protect the American people from the domestic deployment of military forces and the violation of First Amendment rights to dissent.

    Trump is using Chicago and Portland as a testing ground for a full authoritarian takeover. His masked ICE gangs and federal agents are brutalizing people on the streets and terrorizing communities — just like he’s done in Los Angeles and Washington D.C.1

    Now, Trump and Vance are threatening ramp up the violence by using the outdated, dangerously broad Insurrection Act to defy court orders and send troops to even more cities.2,3

    Then, after publicly pressuring his Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to get revenge against his political enemies right away, the DOJ indicted James Comey and Letitia James.4,5 We need our leaders in Congress to immediately stand up to Trump’s law-breaking and take action to save our democracy.

    The Insurrection Act gives the White House extraordinary discretion to declare that a domestic “insurrection” is underway and to deploy U.S. military forces against the American people. “If I had to enact it, I would do that,” Trump said.6 The Brennan Center for Justice said the law “has not been meaningfully updated in over 150 years, [and] is dangerously overbroad and ripe for abuse.”7

    Trump’s relentless push to militarize America pairs with his recent shocking national security memo (NSPM-7) that empowers the FBI and DOJ to go after people and organizations that oppose his agenda.8 Gov. Gavin Newsom sounded the alarm saying, “America is on the brink of martial law.”9

    When Trump threatened to arrest the Illinois Governor and Chicago Mayor, J.B. Pritzker said, “Come and get me.”10 But nearly all Republican governors are supporting Trump’s invasions by supplying National Guard troops from their states to aid federal forces in cities like Chicago.11

    Time is running out for our leaders to find the courage and political will to end Trump’s troop takeover. Congress must take a stand now before it’s too late.
