Trump wants a blank check for war. He supports a broad AUMF (Authorization for Use of Military Force) so that he and his War Cabinet’s twitchy trigger finger can go to war without an act of Congress. We urge you to support Senator Merkley’s alternative AUMF which will rein in Trump’s warmongering and protect the powerful check and balance against military force.
Trump is itching for war. He’s assembled his War Cabinet – Bolton, Pompeo and Haspel – and each have their finger on the trigger. All he needs now is Congress. But that’s where we can stop him.
While Trump is pressing for a broad Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley has introduced an alternative: an AUMF that strictly limits Trump’s ability to wage war.

Trump’s war cabinet is in place, and they’re already threatening war. John Bolton has threatened to attack North Korea. Mike Pompeo helped blow up the Iran deal and is threatening regime change there.
Trump wants to be able to define the “who” and “where” of war, and let his team of warmongers wage longer, more costly, more devastating armed conflict around the world. But Senator Merkley’s alternative AUMF can stop Trump in his tracks.
Senator Merkley’s alternative will block Trump from working around the Constitution to declare war without Congress. It also puts limits on ground forces and requires Congressional approval for expanded military action.1
Without Senator Merkley’s alternative AUMF, Trump will have a blank check to go to war – wherever he wants, whenever he wants and with whoever he wants.
