One of the most damning revelations from the recent Sony leaks is that Hollywood has not yet given up on SOPA, the dangerous bill that would lead to online censorship.
Three years ago, the Internet community historically joined together to stop SOPA and online censorship from passing in Congress, but now SOPA is popping back up in state capitols across the country.
Hollywood’s strategy centers around cozying up to state Attorneys General by providing hundreds of thousands of dollars to directly fund their activities and campaigns.
Sign this petition and tell Jim Hood and your state Attorney General not to sell the Internet to Hollywood lawyers.
It has emerged that one Attorney General in particular is in the grips of Hollywood. In one troubling instance, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood, an avowed SOPA supporter, actually sent a letter to Google that was written by laywers hired by the Hollywood lobbying group MPAA, which chastised the search company for not engaging in online censorship.
According to the The New York Times, the MPAA’s legal guns have also drafted subpoenas and legal briefs for state Attorneys General, and movie studios have plied AGs' campaigns with financial contributions.
Perhaps most disturbing, the MPAA is still pursuing one of the most harmful parts of SOPA: website blocking.
Not only is site-blocking a form of censorship, leading to the take-down of entire sites for hosting just some infringing content, but it could cause serious damage to online security.
Sign this petition to Hood and your state Attorney General:
SOPA was a bad idea in 2011, and it is a bad idea now. Do not do Hollywood’s bidding by pushing ineffective and dangerous online censorship.
We killed SOPA once in Congress, and we can kill it again in the states.
