The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 17 state attorneys general just filed a historic lawsuit against Amazon for its illegal use of monopoly power! This is huge in our fight to break up the powerful mega-corporation.

The lawsuit alleges that Amazon is engaged in an ongoing pattern of illegal conduct that blocks competition, allowing it to wield monopoly power to inflate prices, degrade the quality of products and services, and stifle innovation for consumers and businesses.¹ If the FTC is successful, and continues pursuing Amazon’s illegal conduct, consumers, workers, and small businesses will all win.

Amazon has been steadfast in not only pulling the levers of online retail sales and bullying small businesses, but also in expanding their mega-corporation into other markets — like health care and AI — with multi-billion-dollar investments.

Just this week, Amazon invested a whopping $4 billion in an AI startup.² The dangers and exploitation of AI are well-known, and a powerful corporation like Amazon already abusing antitrust laws with artificial intelligence tools in its hands is ever-more dangerous.

The FTC put it bluntly: “Amazon is a monopolist that uses its power to hike prices on American shoppers and charge sky-high fees on hundreds of thousands of online sellers.”³

Amazon is hurting consumers, and it’s a huge step forward for the FTC to take this action against the mega-corporation.
