    Break Up Amazon!

Petition to President Biden and Congress:

We demand that the Biden administration break up Amazon. Their monopoly has gotten too big, and for the sake of American consumers and the climate, we need to break up the corporation.

“When you get up there, and you see it, you see how tiny it is and how fragile it is.” That’s what Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the solar system, said after taking a rocket to the edge of Earth’s atmosphere.1

Earth’s fragility may have been news to Bezos, but it isn’t news to us. We know that we only have until 2030 to prevent irreparable harm to the planet.2 We also know that Amazon is one of the worst polluters on the planet--emitting over 60,000,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2020.3

Tell Biden: We need to break up Amazon

What did Bezos have to say about climate change after his gas-guzzling trip to space? “We need to take all heavy industry, all polluting industry and move it into space.”4

We’ll be frank here: we don’t have time for Bezos’s stunts. Scientists have called his proposal wildly unrealistic.5 Meanwhile, the climate crisis has taken hold across the US in the form of raging wildfires, whose smoke is polluting the air as far away as New England. If we want to save the planet from the worst climate catastrophes, we need to fight corporate polluters.

Billionaires won’t save us. We won’t be able to address the climate crisis while Amazon maintains a chokehold on our economy. Amazon relies on its monopoly for corporate tax breaks that allow it to create millions of tons of carbon emissions. We need to make our voices louder than Bezos and the other billionaires.
