Police across the country have started using Stingrays without a warrant – a device that lets police indiscriminately suck up the personal cell phone data of thousands of innocent civilians at a time.
Police don’t just use Stingrays to just target criminals – instead police are using them to target people of color, activists, and protestors across the country. And because of the secrecy and a lack of laws regulating their use, we often only find out about the use of Stingrays after the fact.
More than 61 state and local law enforcement agencies have bought and use Stingrays, and now even non-law enforcement agencies, like the IRS have started to use them.
