Our fossil fuel use is not sustainable. In order to curb the climate catastrophe, we must phase out fossil fuels for good--stick to the commitment!
We are in the midst of a global climate crisis. This past year is set to be one of the hottest ever recorded. Yet, we continue to approve new fossil fuel projects and expand our use of fossil fuels every day. In fact, the U.S. is on track to break its all-time fossil fuel production record.
This December, an agreement was reached at COP28 (the annual UN climate conference) to phaseout fossil fuels, including the U.S. committing to support a global fossil fuel phasedown by 2030 and a phaseout by 2050.
Meanwhile, however, planet-heating oil and gas projects approved by the Biden administration threaten to erase the climate emissions progress we’ve recently made: The potential carbon emissions from 17 massive fossil fuel projects approved by the Biden administration are larger than the projected emissions reductions from the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and other climate policies.
Currently, the U.S. is the world's largest oil and gas producer. Last year, it became the world's biggest exporter of liquefied gas, with exports set to nearly double by 2035. The U.S. is also leading the world's largest planned expansion of oil and gas through 2050, at the exact moment we need to be moving in the opposite direction – we are going backward, and we need to reverse course now.
A commitment to end the production and use of fossil fuels is vital to prevent a global climate catastrophe and stop an unprecedented human rights crisis which threatens the rights of billions of people. With millions of eyes on the U.S. at COP this winter, that is exactly what we must demand.
