Oppose AI giveaway to Google, Microsoft and Musk’s xAI!
Petition to the U.S. Senate:
We urge you to oppose the AI preemption provision in the budget bill.
The GOP is trying to pass massive tax breaks for Silicon Valley corporations and trying to halt regulations targeting Big Tech’s artificial intelligence.
The rapid advancements in AI and consolidation of this technology in the hands of a few companies like Google, Musk’s xAI, Microsoft, and OpenAI present serious safety, environmental, and regulatory challenges. Instead of addressing those challenges, Republicans are sneaking a provision into Trump’s big disastrous bill that would fully ban states from regulating AI in any way.1

Demand Progress has joined with over 100 organizations to oppose this dangerous AI policy. The Corporate Power Director here at Demand Progress, Emily Peterson-Cassin, said the proposal is a “dangerous giveaway to Big Tech CEOs who have bet everything on a society where unfinished, unaccountable AI is prematurely forced into every aspect of our lives.”2
The GOP’s ban would mean that even if a company deliberately designed an algorithm that could cause harm — regardless of how intentional or egregious the misconduct or how devastating the consequences — the company making or using that bad tech would be unaccountable to lawmakers and the public.
Congress shouldn’t give Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Elon Musk’s xAI even more unaccountable power. AI calls for serious scrutiny and regulations — not free rein for Big Tech.
