Shut down Alligator Alcatraz, Trump’s “internment camp” in Florida

    Petition to Congress:
We urge you to do everything in your power to shut down the vile, inhumane immigrant detention center in Florida called “Alligator Alcatraz.”

The hastily constructed, dangerous immigrant prison in Florida that Trump has called Alligator Alcatraz1 is an urgent humanitarian disaster.

After visiting the facility, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz called it an "internment camp." Rep. Maxwell Frost said, "What I saw made my heart sink."2 Democratic lawmakers observed intolerable, inhumane conditions that included excessive heat, not enough food, and unlivable sanitation conditions. 30+ people in a cage with 3 toilets, some inoperable, with drinking spigots connected to toilet tanks.3

Republicans are proud of this hellish detention camp meant to hold 3,000 immigrants. It’s a hallmark of Trump’s increasingly brutal, torture-filled mass deportations. Congress must take immediate action to save the people in the Florida immigrant prison and end Trump’s authoritarian policies.

The Trump admin is holding hundreds of people with no criminal charges at Alligator Alcatraz. The White House is rounding up whoever they want, regardless of the law, due process, court orders, or a person’s legal status.

The pace and violence of Trump’s mass deportations necessitated more prisons built quickly, which is why this horrific facility was built in just eight days.4 It’s why Trump is repurposing Guantánamo Bay as a prison for immigrant detention.5 Unless Congress stops this now, there will be more camps like Alligator Alcatraz and more people suffering in horrible conditions.

Rep. Wasserman Schultz said, "This is an appalling, outrageous environment to detain anyone. This place needs to be shut the hell down."6 We need to pressure Congress to do just that.
