    Petition to Congress:
President Biden’s Safer America Plan aims to spend $37 billion dollars on state and local law enforcement agencies and hire 100,000 more police officers, but in many communities police officers still lack any real accountability or oversight. That’s why we demand Congress pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

President Biden wants to hire 100,000 more police officers, and set aside $37 billion dollars for state and local police departments.1 All with little to no oversight or accountability for police officers who use excessive force, or kill unarmed people.

If President Biden wants to move ahead with granting billions of dollars to police without any strings attached, then Congress needs to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to ensure the police are held accountable for lethal use of force.

It’s been more than 2 years since George Floyd was murdered by police in Minneapolis and many communities are still lacking significant reforms that would prevent deaths like this from happening again. Instead, in the last two year police shootings have gone up. According to the Washington Post, last year police set a record for fatally shoot and killing the most people since Washington Post started tracking that data in 2015.2

After a wave of summer protests that drove a national conversation on race and policing, civil rights activists called on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. The House followed through, but the Senate hasn’t.

Now, as President Biden is poised to unleash billions of dollars to police departments, it’s more crucial than ever to bring back the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, and make sure it passes both chambers of Congress so that police are held accountable for lethal use of force.
