Fourteen States Still Ban Sodomy. Is Yours One Of Them?

It's blatant discrimination: Fourteen states still have laws on the books that criminalize "homosexual conduct" or sodomy -- even though these laws were found unconstitutional several years ago. Is your state one of them?  Check out the map Mother Jones made -- then you can automatically email your state lawmakers by filling out the form at right.

Keeping these laws on the books creates discriminatory climates that are ripe for abuse of gays and lesbians.  In Texas, for instance, two men were kicked out of a taco joint in El Paso for kissing in public in 2009.  According to the Associated Press:

The men refused to leave and called the police, believing the restaurant, Chico's Tacos, was out of line with a city law banning discrimination based on sexual orientation. Instead, an officer told the men it was illegal for the two to kiss in public and that they could be cited for "homosexual conduct."

There's only one reason why legislators would refuse to strike these unconstitutional laws: They're biased against gays and lesbians -- and some of them pretty much admit it.  State Representative Wayne Christian (R-TX) sums up the thinking of many of his colleagues: "In this particular session, I'd be hesitant to do any changing," he said, because the current law "better reflects the views of a lot of citizens."

Let's prove Rep. Christian and his ilk wrong, and demand an end to the discrimination.  Just fill out the form at right to automatically email your legislators this note:

TO MY LAWMAKERS:  It's time to stop discriminating: I'm ashamed that our state still tries to criminalize being gay.  I urge you to repeal the state's ban on sodomy or "homosexual conduct" right away -- these laws were found unconstitutional nearly a decade ago.

Just sign on at right and we'll automatically send an email to your state legislators.

Here's a recent article by the Associated Press that covers effort to lift the ban in Texas.
