Trump called on Republicans in Congress to pass the SAVE Act, a devastating voter suppression bill. Trump is using anti-immigrant propaganda and far-right conspiracy theories to fuel support for the legislation.

In front of GOP lawmakers last week, Trump said, “You want to have Voter ID. You want to insist on it. You want to insist on it.”¹ The SAVE Act would add a “show your papers” requirement to register to vote, forcing people to produce specific paperwork proving citizenship. The bill could disenfranchise 20 million people right before the midterms.² One election expert said the SAVE Act would be “one of the worst voting laws in congressional history.”³

House Republicans already passed this extreme voter suppression bill. The Senate must stop the SAVE Act in its tracks to preserve the freedom to vote!

Trump is attacking free and fair elections from every angle. He stacked his administration with election deniers who back his claim that the 2020 elections were stolen.⁴ He sent federal agents to “monitor” elections last year in New Jersey and California, which Governor Gavin Newsom called a clear intimidation tactic.⁵ He’s trying to restrict who can vote and how people can vote — with draconian voter suppression bills and targeting the full elimination of voting by mail.

Republicans from Speaker Mike Johnson to Stephen Miller continue to spread the outright lie that non-citizens vote in large numbers in U.S. elections. The facts are that non-citizens voting is exceptionally rare.⁶ This is merely a far-right talking point to take voting rights away from millions of citizens and help Trump rig the midterms.

The Senate must stop this brazen attack on voting rights and block Trump’s efforts to end democratic elections.
