Senator Bernie Sanders told CNN that he would “Absolutely not” support $200 billion in funding for the war in Iran. He added that he would force a vote on joint resolutions of disapproval to block Trump from sending over 20,000 more bombs to support Israel’s strikes on Iran and Lebanon.¹

Even as Trump appears open to peace talks with Iran, Israel keeps bombing Tehran.² Israel is invading and occupying Lebanon, expanding the horrors of the U.S.-Israeli war.³ Yet, Trump is still trying to bypass Congress and give Israel $660 million worth of weapons. He declared an “emergency” in order to rush this unilateral bomb arms transfer.⁴

Sen. Sanders is pushing all of Congress to block Trump’s bomb shipment right now.

“Given the horrific destruction that Israel’s extremist government has wrought on Gaza, Iran and Lebanon, the last thing in the world that American taxpayers need to do right now is to provide 22,000 new bombs” to Israel, said. Sen. Sanders when he introduced the resolutions. “No more weapons to support an illegal war.”⁵

Since the early months of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, Sen. Sanders has argued that any U.S. weapons shipments to Israel violate the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961. This U.S. law bars the transfer of arms to countries violating international human rights or humanitarian law.^6,7

Sen. Sanders also told CNN this week that the U.S. should not be sending bulldozers to Israel that the IDF is using to destroy the West Bank, and his resolutions would also block a bulldozer shipment.⁸

The U.S. has supported Israel’s violence and destruction in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran with tens of billions of dollars in funding and weapons. Congress must stop Trump from further fueling Israel’s bombing spree and atrocities in the Middle East.
