Our nation is barreling toward a cliff that we cannot afford to fall from. It’s called rent.
August rent is due at the end of the week, but unlike every other month since this pandemic began, the supplementary unemployment benefits that millions of Americans are relying on are about to run out. So are eviction moratoriums in dozens of states.
That’s why Senator Elizabeth Warren introduced a bill that would implement a nationwide eviction moratorium. Warren’s bill will prevent millions of families from being kicked out onto the street in the middle of pandemic. Congress needs to pass this bill immediately.

While Mitch McConnell is gridlocking another stimulus package, millions of Americans are staring down the barrel of potentially being evicted from their homes. Mass evictions won’t just be bad for the economy. With COVID-19 cases rising all over the country, kicking millions of families to the curb will only make this horrible pandemic worse.
The vice grip of rent and mortgage payments on increasingly cash strapped families won’t go away on its own. The out-of-work rent and mortgage crisis will continue each month until the coronavirus pandemic is over. And the lasting effects will linger for much longer.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. Congress could step in and pass Senator Warren’s rent and mortgage moratorium and buy families time and peace of mind while we all try to survive this viral pandemic. But Congress won’t act if we don’t speak up.
