Tell the Senate: No votes until Doug Jones is seated!

    Petition to the Senate:

The Senate must not vote on any major legislation or nominations until Senator-elect Doug Jones is seated.

Alabama shook up Washington. When Doug Jones won last night, the balance of power in the Senate tipped against Donald Trump and his Republican allies.

Now the Senate needs to hold on voting for legislation until Senator-elect Doug Jones is seated.

Tell the Senate: No vote on the Trump tax plan until Doug Jones is seated.

This is actually standard procedure for special elections like the one in Alabama last night.1 In the past, Senate Democrats held off on the Affordable Care Act vote when Republican Scott Brown won a special election in MA. At the time, Senator Harry Reid said, “We’re going to wait until the new senator arrives until we do anything more on health care.”2

Now it’s time for this courtesy to go both ways, but instead Mitch McConnell – with Trump’s blessing – wants to push through the disastrous, only-for-the-wealthy tax plan before the year’s end.

There shouldn’t be a vote on the Trump’s tax plan until every senator is present – that means Doug Jones needs to be sworn in and seated.

Tell the Senate: No vote on the Trump tax plan until Doug Jones is in office.

Senate Republicans are trying to mad-dash their tax bill through Congress. But last night the people of Alabama spoke loud and clear about whose voice they want speaking for them in Washington. That means Senator-elect Doug Jones deserves the opportunity to vote on – and vote against – the tax plan.

There’s too much at stake in the Republicans’ tax plan to vote on it without Doug Jones officially in office. Their tax plan gives massive tax breaks to corporations and mega-wealthy – adding as much as $1.5 trillion to the national deficit3 – and leaving everyone who’s not already extremely rich to pay for it.

Tell the Senate not to vote on anything until Doug Jones is officially seated and sworn in.
